GDAMS reports from Yorkshire

14th April, Menwith Hill, North Yorkshire

Lindis (Percy), Coordinator of Campaign for the Accountability of American Bases (CAAB) reports on events at the NSA base in Menwith Hill.

I went to NSA Menwith Hill at 12 – 2 pm (as it’s Global Day of Action Against Military Spending today!). The Ministry of Defence police were clearly expecting many more! They had seen the call on the CAAB facebook, there were three officers and me.

All very peaceful and doing what we have finally achieved at the regular Tuesday demonstration (6-8 pm) – up by the main gates, standing in front of each car coming out of the base with the upside down US flag and then step aside.  We have had a huge struggle to achieve this after much personal cost and nastiness by the MDP.

After the two hours were up I tied the upside down US flag on the alarmed weld mesh fence to take a photo and post it to you. The upside down US flag said “GLOBAL DAY OF ACTION AGAINST MILITARY SPENDING” – the same one we used last year. The MDP turned up – took it down – I put it up again – took several photos…and the photos haven’t come out!! Ah well!

It was somewhat of a spontaneous action.  I only put it out on facebook on Saturday night.  At least someone was there.
