SUMMARY:GDAMS action at Menwith Hill
DESCRIPTION:Members of Yorkshire CND will be joining the weekly protest demonstration by the Menwith Hill Accountability Campaign at the Menwith Hill US spy base on 28th April as part of the World Beyond War’s Global Days of Action on Military Spending (https://demilitarize.org/). \n\n\n\nThe protest starts at 6pm but some will arrive at 4pm for a walk around the base before that. \n\n\n\nGrowing world tensions and distrust show clearly that it is time to cut spending on the military not increase it. \n\n\n\nBefore things escalate into a global war – we must remember that in the nuclear age War will costs us the Earth. \n\n\n\nMore information on the Yorkshire CND website https://yorkshirecnd.org.uk/event/gdams-action-at-menwith-hill-tuesday-28th-april/

SUMMARY:Don’t Bank on The Bomb! UK – National Network Meeting April 2025
DESCRIPTION:In a world ablaze with escalating conflicts\, global instability\, and worsening humanitarian crises\, the threat of nuclear weapons to human life is mounting. And yet\, every year\, billions of pounds flow through UK banks\, pension funds\, and other financial institutions that invest in companies producing nuclear weapons\, making the threat of nuclear war even more real.  \n\n\n\nAt Don’t Bank on the Bomb UK\, we are building a nationwide movement to pressure banks and financial institutions to withdraw their support for the nuclear weapons industry\, by demanding they move their money away from companies that manufacture and trade in weapons of mass destruction. \n\n\n\nWhether you’re an experienced activist or just learning about the issue\, Don’t Bank on the Bomb UK is the perfect place to join others committed to building a safer\, nuclear-free world.  \n\n\n\nJoin our second network meeting on Tuesday 22nd April 2025. We are excited to welcome banktrack.org’s Max Hammer to delve deeper into the investment policies of our commercial banks and constructively engage with financial institutions to strengthen their policies to align with ethical commitments. \n\n\n\nIf you have any questions about the campaign or this event\, get in touch with Zahraa\, our DBOTB Project Coordinator: zahraakapasi@medact.org. \n\n\n\nRSVP here https://www.medact.org/event/dbotb-april-2025/

SUMMARY:The Future of military spending in the UK: GCOMS-UK AGM 2025
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a presentation by Professor Ron Smith from Birkbeck University of London as we discuss the future of military spending in the UK. With the Labour Government pledging to increase military spending to 2.5% of GDP – with the support of other political parties\, the UK is set to spend billions of pounds more on the military in coming years\, despite already spending more than £100\,000 every minute of the year. \n\n\n\nProf Ron Smith is Defence and Political Economist\, author and expert on the UK military spending landscape. We are delighted that he will be able to join us for our AGM to discuss the ongoing Strategic Defence Review as well as identifying areas where military spending could be reduced. \n\n\n\nThere will be time for questions and discussion following the talk.

SUMMARY:Mismatch or on Track: Does Global Military Spending Align with National Security Priorities?
DESCRIPTION:The United Nations Institute for Disarmament Research (UNIDIR) is pleased to invite you to an online webinar ‘Mismatch or on track: Does global military spending align with national security priorities’\, organized in cooperation with the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI).\n\n\n\nOn 24 April\, the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute will release its new data on global military expenditure for 2022. Global military expenditure is expected to continue to rise as many states have announced record level of spending increases amid violent conflicts and rising tensions. In a world with growing non-conventional insecurities\, these increases reflect a perception of a deteriorating security environment where states continue to seek greater military strength and deterrence. \n\n\n\nThis online webinar will provide an opportunity to learn about the latest trends in global military spending and examine these considering the most pressing national and global security threats and international peace and security agenda items. It aims to discuss the following questions: \n\n\n\n\nWhat are the main factors driving increases in military spending levels?\n\n\n\nCould spending allocated for military needs be used to address broader security challenges and priorities as defined by governments?\n\n\n\nWhat role does transparency play?\n\n\n\n\nSPEAKERS\n\n\n\n\nDr Diego Lopes da Silva\, Senior Researcher\, Military Expenditure and Arms Production Programme\, Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI)\n\n\n\nMr Xiao Liang\, Research Assistant\, Military Expenditure and Arms Production Programme\, Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI)\n\n\n\nProfessor Mary Kaldor\, Emeritus Professor of Global Governance and Director of the Conflict Research Programme at The London School of Economics and Political Science\n\n\n\nMs Alexandra Marksteiner\, Associate Political Affairs Officer\, Conventional Arms Branch\, United Nations Office for Disarmament Affairs (UNODA)\n\n\n\nModerated by Ms Alexandra Kuimova\, Researcher\, Conventional Arms and Ammunition Programme\, United Nations Institute for Disarmament Research (UNIDIR)\n\n\n\n\nPARTICIPANTS\n\n\n\nUNIDIR welcomes and encourages the participation of members of the diplomatic community\, civil society\, international organizations\, as well as experts interested in issues pertaining to military spending\, opportunity costs\, security priorities. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRSVP Here

SUMMARY:The World at War: A Trade Union Issue - Stop the War TU Conference 2023
DESCRIPTION:We are living in a more and more dangerous world. The war in Ukraine is a disaster for the people there and effectively pits two nuclear armed great powers against each other. It could escalate at any time and is already causing economic chaos. Meanwhile\, the US is ramping up the pressure on China\, with full support from the British government and other NATO allies. \n\n\n\nAll this is raising tensions around the world\, and in the middle of the worst attacks on living standards since the 1930s they want us to pay for this new militarism. Both Tory leadership candidates are committed to increasing defence spending to 3% of GDP – way above the European average. \n\n\n\nWe have called this conference because we believe that it is always working people who are the first victims of war and that the record sums being spent on arms and the military should be redirected to public services\, to the NHS\, social care and our crumbling schools. We believe that the slogan ‘cut warfare not welfare’ should be taken up by the whole of the trade union movement. \n\n\n\nThe conference is open to all trade unionists. We urge you to register but also to spread the word in your branches and trades councils.

SUMMARY:GCOMS UK AGM: UK military spending in context

SUMMARY:Common Security Report 2022: UK launch
DESCRIPTION:Join CND and guest speakers to launch the Common Security 2022 report in the UK! \n\n\n\nThis year marks the 40th anniversary of Olof Palme’s Independent Commission on Disarmament and Security Issues. The Commission presented its report in 1982\, at the height of the Cold War\, and the Commission developed the concept of Common Security – the idea that nations and populations can only feel safe when their counterparts feel safe. \n\n\n\nThe new Common Security 2022 report – published by the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC)\, the International Peace Bureau (IPB) and the Olof Palme International Center – comes at a time when the international order faces severe challenges. The world stands at a crossroads. It is faced with a choice between an existence based on confrontation and aggression or one to be rooted in a transformative peace agenda and common security. \n\n\n\nWe’ll be discussing these topics with guest speakers including Sharan Burrow\, General Secretary ITUC; and Reiner Braun\, Executive Director IPB. Chaired by Kate Hudson\, CND General Secretary. \n\n\n\n\nRegister

SUMMARY:It's Time to Act for True Security: The Environmental Costs of Militarisation
DESCRIPTION:As part of The Festival of Debate\, this event explores the impacts of the military on the environment and climate change\, and the urgent need to re-think security. It is a chance to hear first-hand about the effects of nuclear colonialism on people in the global south. \n\n\n\nLeona Morgan from New Mexico will speak about the effects of uranium mining and the dumping of waste on her people and their land. \n\n\n\nMatt Fawcett from Global Campaign on Military Spending UK will speak on the costs of military spending – both financial and environmental\, how emissions from the military (7% of all carbon emissions) are largely excluded from carbon reporting and target-setting\, the huge discrepancy between what is spent globally on the military (£1\,982bn in 2020) and climate finance (£79.6bn in 2020)\, and the need to move money away from excessive military budgets to meet real human need.

SUMMARY:GDAMS Social media storm
DESCRIPTION:This is the big one. The latest SIPRI global military spending figures are out\, showing two shocking firsts for military spending; global spending Exceeded $2 trillion (US) and UK spent over £50bn. This is our opportunity to highlight the dangers of runaway military spending and the opportunity costs of diverting public resource from public health\, common security and the climate crisis. \n\n\n\nKey messages:\n\n\n\nSIPRI has estimated global military expenditure last year was at least $2\,113 billion (US)\, the first time it has exceeded $2 trillion (US): an average of more than $5.78 billion (US) every day. This comprised a 6.1% nominal increase since 2020 (0.7% when adjusted for inflation). \n\n\n\nUK spending \n\n\n\nIn current cash terms the UK rise in military spending for 2021 was in double digits – passing £50bn for the first time. Even adjusted for current rampant inflation and exchange rate change – real terms spending increased by 3% in 2021 despite the continued impact of pandemic.Per person\, the UK spends more than double the EU average on it’s military at over $1\,000 for every child\, woman & man in the country. How much did the UK spend on weaponry for your family last year? For every £1 spent on reducing UK carbon emissions we spend £7.45 on the military. Our military burden is holding us back from tackling the real threats we face.\n\n\n\nUkraine \n\n\n\nMilitary spending as deterrence has dramatically failed. NATO spending in 2021 was 55% of all arms spending and 18 times that of Russia\, but did nothing to deter Putin’s aggression. Recent military spending increases by NATO countries\, while framed as ‘taking tough action’\, will do nothing to aid the suffering of the Ukrainian people\, they will only further stoke arms industry profits.Ukraine is asking for a global embargo of Russian fossil fuels – with a fraction of our current arms expenditure we could make that happen now\, via investments in energy efficiency and rapidly deployable renewable energy. In the UK Greenpeace has called for a £10bn emergency fund this year to cut all Russian fossil fuels while combating UK fuel poverty and the climate crisis.\n\n\n\nTiming\n\n\n\nWhile we’ll be sharing content and media stories about the SIPRI from 8am\, save something for the massive global push at mid-day UK time\, when we’ll try to get a trending topic in political channels. \n\n\n\nHashtags \n\n\n\nWe recommend using only two hashtags per post on Twitter\, on Facebook and Instagram you can be more liberal. Use the below as appropriate. \n\n\n\nNew for this year: \n\n\n\n#GDAMS2022  \n\n\n\n#GivePeaceABudget \n\n\n\nPlus our standard: \n\n\n\n#WelfareNotWarfare \n\n\n\n#MoveTheMoney \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLast year\, by working together globally the storm ‘reached’ over 100 million accounts on Twitter alone. We hope to build on that success this year.

SUMMARY:SCRAP Weapons’ Webinar: After the Assault on Ukraine: Strategies for Reducing Military Expenditure
DESCRIPTION:Please come to a webinar organised by SCRAP Weapons that will showcase strategies for reducing military spending in light of the Ukraine crisis. The webinar will be held on 22nd April\, as part of the International Peace Bureau’s 2022 Global Days on Military Spending (GDAMS). \n\n\n\nWhat does Russia’s unprovoked invasion of Ukraine mean for global military preparedness and spending? Should countries increase their military spending\, or build worldwide sustainable security by honouring their commitments to general and complete disarmament? \n\n\n\nThe SCRAP Weapons webinar will outline practical proposals for realising disarmament commitments. It will introduce SCRAP Weapons’ Framework for a Treaty on General and Complete Disarmament\, and detail the Global Weapons Tracking Service– a portal to organisations tracking weapons\, weapon uses and other threats to human security\, designed to contribute to transparency about global patterns of proliferation and disarmament. \n\n\n\nSuch considerations are needed now more than ever. In these unprecedented times\, the world has been horrified by the levels of violence inflicted against Ukraine\, along with Russia’s statements about nuclear\, chemical and biological weapons. Alongside this\, the COVID-19 pandemic continues to demonstrate that governments have failed to invest sufficiently in their public health infrastructure\, while prioritising spending on military modernisation\, procurement and operations. \n\n\n\nPresentations will be delivered by SCRAP Weapons’ team: \n\n\n\nDan Plesch (Project Director)\, Eloisa Romani (Project Coordinator)\, Henrietta Wilson (Lead Researcher\, Global Weapons Tracking) and Zahraa Kapasi (Operations Manager). \n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister here

SUMMARY:Launch Event “Common security 2022”
DESCRIPTION:The world stands at a crossroads. The choice is between an existence based on competition and aggression or one rooted in peace and common security. Humanity faces the existential threats of nuclear war\, climate change and pandemics. How we respond to these threats will define our very survival. \n\n\n\nOur world order faces severe challenges. The common systems and structures – needed to provide security\, combat poverty and inequality and prevent human suffering – are inadequate\, and frequently violated or ignored. The future of humanity depends on us fixing our struggling global order.  \n\n\n\nThis year marks the 40th anniversary of Olof Palme’s Independent Commission on Disarmament and Security Issues. Now\, in 2022\, Russian aggression against Ukraine is a reminder of what can happen when the world order fails. It is time to consider whether Palme’s concept of Common Security can help bring us back from the brink. \n\n\n\nThe report\, Common Security 2022\, informed by a High-Level Advisory Commission\, a diverse group of prominent people from every continent\, builds on the work of the Palme report and shows the way forward. \n\n\n\nFollow the launch event on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/events/5104210442992109/?ref=newsfeed \n\n\n\nIf you wish to attend on site in Stockholm\, register via this form (The number of seats is limited): \n\n\n\nProgramme\n\n\n\nPresentation of the report Common Security 2022\,\n\n\n\nAnna Sundström\, Secretary General\, Olof Palme International Center\n\n\n\nCommon Security – challenges of today’s world\n\n\n\nJan Eliasson\, Former Deputy Secretary-General of the UN and Minister for Foreign Affairs\, SwedenSharan Burrow\, General Secretary\, International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC)\, AustraliaSean Conner\, Deputy Executive Director\, IPB\, USAModerator: Anna Sundström\n\n\n\nVoices from High-Level Advisory Commission\n\n\n\nCommon Security -a blueprint for future survival\n\n\n\nStefan Löfven\, former Prime Minister SwedenRosaline Marbinah\, OSCE Special Representative on Youth and Security\, SwedenTrisha Shetty\, CEO\, SheSays and President Steering Committee\, Paris Peace Forum\, India\n\n\n\nClosing Remarks \n\n\n\nPhilip Jennings\, President\, International Peace Bureau\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin on Facebook Live
