SUMMARY:GDAMS demonstration at NSA Menwith Hill Spy Base
DESCRIPTION:On 12th April Bradford CND will join the regular gate-side demonstration by Menwith Hill Accountability Campaign as part of the Global Days of Action on Military Spending month of protest. Menwith Hill is a US NSA spy base on the Yorkshire Moors which operates without UK parliamentary oversight. The US maintains over 1\,000 foreign military bases around the world\, operating largely outside of the control of their host nations\, the most recent expansion of US/NATO military forces has been in bases across Asia and Africa. The US spends more on it’s military than the next twelve highest spenders combined and via NATO pushes European countries to follow it’s unsustainable example. \n\n\n\nMenwith Hill is the largest intelligence-gathering\, interception and surveillance base outside the US. It has many roles which are generally for US interests only (diplomatic\, military and economic) – being the hub of the ECHELON global surveillance system (Wikipedia). Menwith Hill featured heavily in Edward Snowden’s release of top secret documents which revealed the extent of the intelligence gathering and surveillance on us all by the NSA/CIA (with the help of GCHQ).

SUMMARY:Challenging the Military Carbon Bootprint
DESCRIPTION:The world’s militaries are major carbon emitters yet are not even required to report their emissions\, let alone reduce them. This workshop will discuss the size of military carbon emissions\, the role of the military sector in protecting the extraction economy\, how they seek to capitalise on the climate crisis by offering armed ‘solutions’\, and how we might confront military power and forge lasting just alternatives to war. \n\n\n\nContributors: Stuart Parkinson – Scientists for Global Responsibility UK\, Nnimmo Bassey – Health of Mother Earth Foundation Nigeria\, Nancy Mancias – CODEPINK (US)\, Tim Wallis – World BEYOND War (US)\, Hilary Evens – Movement for the Abolition of War (UK) \n\n\n\nEvent will take place live in Glasgow but will also be recorded. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister here

SUMMARY:Climate and Militarism March (COP26)
DESCRIPTION:Speakers at the event on 4 November will include: Stuart Parkinson of Scientists for Global Responsibility UK\, Chris Nineham of the Stop the War Coalition\, Alison Lochhead of Greenham Women Everywhere\, Jodie Evans of CODEPINK: Women for Peace\, Tim Pluta of World BEYOND War\, David Collins of Veterans For Peace\, Lynn Jamieson of the Scottish Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament\, and others to be announced. \n\n\n\n“Our purpose here begins with making people aware of the problem\,” said David Swanson\, Executive Director of World BEYOND War. “Imagine a limit on dangerous items you can carry on airplanes that makes an exception for nuclear weapons. Imagine a diet that limits your calories but makes an exception for 36 gallons of ice cream an hour. Here the world is all gathering to impose limits on greenhouse gas emissions that make an exception for militaries. Why? What possible excuse is there for that\, unless killing people in the short term is so important to us that we’re willing to kill everyone in the long term. We need to speak up for life\, and soon.” \n\n\n\n“War and militarism are amongst the unnamed enemies of our ecosphere\,” said Chris Nineham of the Stop the War Coalition. “The U.S. military is the biggest single consumer of oil on the planet\, and the last two decades of war have polluted on an almost unimaginable scale. It is a scandal that military emissions are being excluded from the discussion. If we want to end warming we need to end war.” \n\n\n\n“War is obsolete. There is no doubt\, the quicker we get rid of it\, the quicker we improve the climate\,” added Tim Pluta\, World BEYOND War Chapter Organizer in Asturias\, Spain.

SUMMARY:Europe Against the Cold War!
DESCRIPTION:The US administration is attempting to draw Europe into its cold war against China \n\n\n\nThe most recent summits of both the G7 and NATO in June 2021 unfortunately saw a number European governments accede to the new cold war agenda advanced by US President Joe Biden. The NATO Summit’s communiqué identified China’s rise as a “systemic challenge” and a security threat to the Western military alliance. \n\n\n\nThe announcement in September that Britain has formed a new anti-China military alliance alongside Australia and the US – AUKUS – represents a further serious escalation of this new cold war against China. This year has also witnessed Britain\, France and Germany engaging in provocative and aggressive military gestures by sending warships to the South China Sea. \n\n\n\nMeanwhile the US has also been attempting to prevent the signing of the EU-China Comprehensive Agreement on Investment\, a major agreement to strengthen economic cooperation between the EU and China. \n\n\n\nThis new cold war against China is not only against the interests of the people of China\, it is also against the interests of the people of Europe. \n\n\n\nAs the new cold war heats up\, China is being increasingly demonised in the mainstream media in both the US and Europe\, leading to an alarming rise in anti-China racism and hate crimes directed against people of East and South-East Asian heritage. \n\n\n\nOn the economic front\, for Europe to join in with the US administration’s offensive against China\, which is designed to hold back China’s economic development\, would be an act of economic self-harm. China is already a major trading partner of most European countries. Any country that follows Washington’s cold war approach will suffer economic damage – losing jobs\, trade\, investment and access to advanced technologies. \n\n\n\nInstead of adopting such cold war positions\, what is required is international cooperation to tackle the real threats and problems facing all of humanity. These include defeating the on-going Covid19 pandemic\, building an economic recovery and taking the urgent action needed to stop impending climate breakdown. All of these problems require genuine global cooperation to tackle and the new cold war against China represents a real distraction and serious obstacle to solving them. \n\n\n\nThe biggest threat of all is that the US-led new cold war escalates into a deadly hot war against China – which has the potential to be nothing less than a total catastrophe for all of humanity. \n\n\n\nOn Saturday 23 October No Cold War is bringing together speakers from 9 countries from across Europe\, China\, the US and the Global South to discuss why the US-led new cold war against China is against the interests of all of humanity and why Europe should not go along with this aggression. \n\n\n\nJoin us to rally opposition in Europe against this dangerous threat to world peace and prosperity. \n\n\n\nSpeakers: \n\n\n\n* Yanis Varoufakis\, former Finance Minister of Greece\, Greece \n\n\n\n* Maite Mola\, Vice-President European Left Party\, Spain \n\n\n\n* Kate Hudson\, General Secretary of CND\, Britain \n\n\n\n* Nabil Boukili\, Federal Deputy\, Belgium Workers Party\, Belgium \n\n\n\n* Victor Gao\, Professor at Soochow University and former interpreter for Deng Xiaoping\, China \n\n\n\n* Vijay Prashad\, Executive Director of the Tricontinental Institute for Social Research\, India \n\n\n\n* Madison Tang\, CODEPINK\, US \n\n\n\n* Cinzia Della Porta\, Unione Sindacale Di Base\, Italy \n\n\n\n* Maria Cernat\, Editor of The Barricade\, Romania \n\n\n\nTranslation: English\, Spanish\, French \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister here

SUMMARY:The Rise of Military Spending and Weaponization of the Global South under the Pandemic: What must be done to stop this?
DESCRIPTION:Panelists \n\n\n\nRavinder Pal Singh\, India – Senior Advisor\, Control Arms Foundation IndiaLisaLinda Natividad\, Guam/Palau – Primary Convener\, Guahan Coalition for Peace and JusticeAlfredo ‘Fred’ Lubang\, Philippines – Regional Representative\, Nonviolence International Southeast Asia and National Coordinator\, Philippine Campaign to Ban LandminesMohammad Shoaib Ahmadzai\, Afghanistan – Managing Director\, Community Development\, Rehabilitation and Education Organisation\n\n\n\nWorld military spending has been on the rise in recent years reaching almost 2 Trillion US dollars in 2020 with China\, India\, Japan\, South Korea and Australia registering as some of the highest military spenders in the Asia Pacific. This has been the trend between 2019 to 2020 and over the decade of 2011-2020. As capacities for war continue to grow\, so does the collateral damage to people and infrastructure. The proportion of funds going to humanitarian and development aid initiatives focused on the ‘clean up’ in the aftermath of conflict is growing. This has created an illogical paradox of decisions made by States and is a form of collective self-harm. When put into a tangible context\, one year of the global military budget equates to 700 years of the UN’s standard budget (RCW). If only this absurd parity of figures was hypothetical however it is very much reality and is showing no sign of reversing. The populations of the Asia region are especially vulnerable to harm from the impacts of expanding militaries and weaponry advancement for many reasons. This webinar aims to take a closer look at what those reasons and help us to understand the status quo of the world we live in as well as the world we want to live in. The webinar’s panel will aim to answer the below questions: \n\n\n\nWhat does this trend on military spending indicate? What are the factors and considerations that bring about these trends\, are these trends interrelated ?What and how do these factors impact the lives of peoples and the planet?Would the resurgence of authoritarian regimes in the Global South or strengthening bilateral security alliances contribute to their further weaponization? What are the challenges to the peoples’ movements to affect government policies in bringing down the increasing military spendings and to re-allocating the sums thus saved for promoting genuine peace and social justice? What alternatives should be understood and put to practice that would create meaningful change in the lives of people?

SUMMARY:Meeting human needs will create REAL Security: Paul Rogers & Jenny Pearce
DESCRIPTION:To address COVID\, climate and the ecological emergencies we must move from an outmoded model of national security towards human security. Event organised by Peace & Justice. \n\n\n\nProfessor Paul Rogers\, Emeritus Professor of Peace Studies at Bradford University and President of the Movement for the Abolition of War.Professor Jenny Pearce\, Latin America and Caribbean Centre (LACC). London School of Economics.Moderator: Brian Larkin\, Peace & Justice Coordinator\n\n\n\nEither join at 6pm for the Peace & Justice AGM\, or from 6.30pm for the talks and discussion.   \n\n\n\n\nRegister here\n\n\n\n\n6:30 – 6:50pm Keynote: Paul Rogers\n\n\n\nTo address COVID\, climate and the ecological emergencies we must move from an outmoded model of national security towards human security \n\n\n\nThis year the UK increased military spending by about 10%\, the biggest increase since the Korean War. It plans to build 80 new nuclear warheads while continuing to supply arms to Saudi Arabia and cutting aid to Yemen by half. Globally\, military spending is over $1.8 Trillion\, while $1.2 Trillion is needed to ensure we reach net zero greenhouse gas emissions. And wealthy nations\, who also spend the most on weapons\, are failing to commit the funds needed to ensure that people in the poorest countries receive COVID19 vaccinations. \n\n\n\nIsn’t it time to cut funding to the military and prioritize human security and a future for life on earth instead? With the UK hosting COP26 in Glasgow in November\, shouldn’t the UK lead the way to a shift from the failed model of military security toward real human security and a just green recovery from COVID and the climate and ecological crises? \n\n\n\nResponse: Prof Jenny Pearce\n\n\n\nRethinking Security as a Means to Reduce not Reproduce Violence \n\n\n\nIn her monograph Politics without Violence? Jenny Pearce asks: “As climate change differentially impacts on the globe\, will violence be the way the privileged protect themselves from the human struggle that climate change will mean?” Indeed\, while recognising the common global threat to security posed by climate change\, in “Global Britain”\, the Integrated Review of Security\, Defense and Foreign Policy\, with its increases in military spending and push toward greater force projection\, we are already seeing this. Professor Pearce will speak on how peace building is impeded by a focus on militarist solutions to security\, with specific reference to Central America\, particularly Columbia.

SUMMARY:International Day of Action against Foreign Military Bases: Menwith Hill
DESCRIPTION:On 30th April as a part of the GCOMS called International Day of Action against Foreign Military Bases\, there will be a protest outside the US spy-base at Menwith Hill organised by Menwith Hill Accountability Campaign and Yorkshire CND. There are now over 1\,000 bases foreign bases around the world\, operating largely outside of the control of their host nations. In response to recent expansion of US/NATO military forces in bases across Asia and Africa\, this day of action was called to show solidarity and opposition around the world.\n\nPracticalities\nDue to the ongoing health crisis this will be a socially distanced protest\, with a couple of different options for walks around the base. We are not able to provide toilet facilities or refreshments on this occasion so we ask that everyone bears this in mind and brings what they will need for the afternoon.\nMenwith Hill is the largest intelligence-gathering\, interception and surveillance base outside the US.

SUMMARY:An introduction to STWR's campaign for Article 25
DESCRIPTION:Share The World’s Resources (STWR) are hosting an online presentation and discussion about our campaign for Article 25 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. \n\n\n\nArticle 25 proclaims the right of everyone to adequate food\, housing\, healthcare and social security. But still today\, millions of people subsist without sufficient means for survival. Even in the wealthiest nations\, we are witnessing a dramatic rise in levels of hunger\, deprivation\, social exclusion and economic inequality due to the coronavirus pandemic.  \n\n\n\nOur presentation will outline the current reality of extreme poverty across the world\, and the need for human rights to be protected by the rule of law within every nation. We suggest that only the massed goodwill of ordinary people calling for Article 25 can bring about an end to poverty in a world of plenty.  \n\n\n\nParticipants are invited to further engage with and discuss these issues\, and to join a global movement that calls on governments to share the world’s resources. \n\n\n\nTime: 7-8pm BST on Sunday 25th April [11am PST\, 2pm EST\, 8pm CET]\n\n\n\nIf you would like to attend\, please email Victoria Gater below to register and receive the zoom link. Numbers are limited and if the event becomes full we will keep you informed about our next talk. \n\n\n\nvictoria[at]sharing[dot]org  \n\n\n\nFor more information about STWR’s campaign\, please visit: www.sharing.org/article25

SUMMARY:Military Spending: Squandering the Present\, Imperilling the Future
DESCRIPTION:In the midst of the Covid\, economic and ecological crises the UK government has announced the biggest percentage increase in military spending in almost 70 years. The military budget is being increased by over £24 billion over the next 4 years. These extra public funds are largely being squandered on a deeply worrying new arms race\, while many social and ecological needs are not being met.On Sunday 25 April at 11.30 there will be a meeting for learning on military spending organised by the Forest of Dean Quaker Meeting. This will be an opportunity to explore these dangerous developments\, as well as to consider how we can challenge them. The topic will be introduced with a talk by GCOMS UK Steering Group member Daniel Jakopovich\, Peace & Disarmament Programme Manager at Quakers in Britain.

SUMMARY:Militarism\, Climate Change\, and Global Dissent
DESCRIPTION:The militarisation of societies\, and the industrialisation of warfare\, are major (and often hidden) causes of environmental damage and climate change. The concept of “security” is mixed up with usage of vast resources to make constant preparation for war and increase readiness to destroy the planet. From the carbon boot-print of military activity to the wider costs of conflict; from corporate greed to the role of militarized suppression of dissent – this session will look at the critical intersections between militarism and the climate crisis – and how these can be challenged. As one exacerbates and intensifies the other – it is ‘from the ground up’ that we resist; it is from the ground up that we take action. \n\n\n\nOrganised by GCOMS UK supporting organisations as part of From the Ground Up: Taking Action\, a global gathering for climate justice\, taking place from 22-25 April 2021 and organised by the COP26 Coalition. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nRegister

SUMMARY:Threats of War: Britain's New Global Role - Conference
DESCRIPTION:Our government is desperate for Britain to play a global military role. Despite the pandemic\, economic crisis and crumbling services\, they boosted defence spending in 2020 by the biggest margin in years. They are refusing to withdraw support for the Saudi-led war on Yemen war and are keen to be partner No. 1 in the US push for a new cold war on China. \nTo illustrate their ambitions the government is dispatching an aircraft carrier strike group with US fighter planes on board to the Pacific in May ‘to make global Britain a reality’. \nMake sure you join us at this conference to discuss what is driving this new round of provocations and how they can be stopped. \n  \nRegister here >>
