DESCRIPTION:On 26th April we will take part in a global twitter storm to coincide with the publication of SIPRI figures on military spending. In the UK we’ll focus our activity in the morning from 8am-10.30am to try to get the issue trending\, but do use the hashtags all day as more countries come online later in the day.\nThe hashtags we’ll be using are #DefundTheMilitary and #HealthcareNotWarfare.\nTwitters guidance is not to over use #hashtags ‘One to two relevant hashtags per Tweet is the sweet spot’. Please tweet your own message of support during this time and retweet others’ messages as widely as possible.\nTheir are already a range of graphics to use on the day and we’ll be creating more over the coming days and sharing editable templates so you can make your own.

SUMMARY:An introduction to STWR's campaign for Article 25
DESCRIPTION:Share The World’s Resources (STWR) are hosting an online presentation and discussion about our campaign for Article 25 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. \n\n\n\nArticle 25 proclaims the right of everyone to adequate food\, housing\, healthcare and social security. But still today\, millions of people subsist without sufficient means for survival. Even in the wealthiest nations\, we are witnessing a dramatic rise in levels of hunger\, deprivation\, social exclusion and economic inequality due to the coronavirus pandemic.  \n\n\n\nOur presentation will outline the current reality of extreme poverty across the world\, and the need for human rights to be protected by the rule of law within every nation. We suggest that only the massed goodwill of ordinary people calling for Article 25 can bring about an end to poverty in a world of plenty.  \n\n\n\nParticipants are invited to further engage with and discuss these issues\, and to join a global movement that calls on governments to share the world’s resources. \n\n\n\nTime: 7-8pm BST on Sunday 25th April [11am PST\, 2pm EST\, 8pm CET]\n\n\n\nIf you would like to attend\, please email Victoria Gater below to register and receive the zoom link. SUMMARY:Military Spending: Squandering the Present\, Imperilling the Future
DESCRIPTION:In the midst of the Covid\, economic and ecological crises the UK government has announced the biggest percentage increase in military spending in almost 70 years. The military budget is being increased by over £24 billion over the next 4 years. These extra public funds are largely being squandered on a deeply worrying new arms race\, while many social and ecological needs are not being met.On Sunday 25 April at 11.30 there will be a meeting for learning on military spending organised by the Forest of Dean Quaker Meeting. This will be an opportunity to explore these dangerous developments\, as well as to consider how we can challenge them.The topic will be introduced with a talk by GCOMS UK Steering Group member Daniel Jakopovich\, Peace & Disarmament Programme Manager at Quakers in Britain.

SUMMARY:Militarism\, Climate Change\, and Global Dissent
DESCRIPTION:The militarisation of societies\, and the industrialisation of warfare\, are major (and often hidden) causes of environmental damage and climate change. The concept of “security” is mixed up with usage of vast resources to make constant preparation for war and increase readiness to destroy the planet. From the carbon boot-print of military activity to the wider costs of conflict; from corporate greed to the role of militarized suppression of dissent – this session will look at the critical intersections between militarism and the climate crisis – and how these can be challenged. As one exacerbates and intensifies the other – it is ‘from the ground up’ that we resist; it is from the ground up that we take action. \n\n\n\nOrganised by GCOMS UK supporting organisations as part of From the Ground Up: Taking Action\, a global gathering for climate justice\, taking place from 22-25 April 2021 and organised by the COP26 Coalition. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nRegister

Despite the pandemic\, economic crisis and crumbling services\, they boosted defence spending in 2020 by the biggest margin in years.
