In a statement to the house on Thursday 19th November Boris Johnson committed to significant new spending on the UK\u2019s armed forces<\/a>: an additional \u00a316.5bn – amounting to a real terms increase of \u00a324bn when combined with the already declared increase of over \u00a37bn by 2024-25. This is a staggering sum to spend on weaponry at a time when the health, care and social systems of the UK are in crisis after ten years of government imposed austerity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There has been some worthwhile media analysis, particularly the Guardian<\/strong> on how the money will be spent<\/a> and it’s implications<\/a> and the Independent <\/strong>on Keir Starmer’s apparent support for the announcement<\/a>. The move has been roundly criticised by campaigners with Kate Hudson of CND<\/strong> stating, <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our world is encountering growing difficulties on the slow path to peace upon which it had embarked and which had already begun to bear good fruit’.
