Human Security

What do we mean by security?

Security is vital for all of us so that we can thrive, prosper and live fulfilling lives. However many of the actions carried out by successive UK governments in the name of ‘national security’, ‘the war on terror’ etc have actually made us less secure, both at home and around the world.

Human security is a new way of understanding global vulnerabilities. Its proponents challenge the traditional notion of security through militarisation, arguing instead that security should be at assessed at a human rather than national level. Increased funding for the military does little to address threats such as pandemics and the climate crisis — and in fact hampers the international cooperation so essential in tackling them.

The changing geo-political landscape requires new thinking to come up with different priorities. Many UK civil society organisations have banded together to do just that.
