Take action on nuclear weapons spending

As the nuclear armed states around the world waste millions of pounds a day on nuclear weapons GCOMS-UK is supporting the International Campaign for the Abolition of Nuclear Weapons (ICAN) in taking action.

As the UK continues to spend over £100,000 every second on total military spending – the project to replace our nuclear weapons system, known as Trident, continues despite the estimated cost of at least £205bn. This against the backdrop of the “tough choices” being made by the Chancellor including cutting the Winter Fuel Allowance for pensioners.

The nine nuclear armed states, the UK, USA, France, Russia, China, Israel, India, Pakistan and North Korea continue to upgrade, expand and modify their arsenals, despite the first five having signing the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty which commits them to negotiating towards disarmament.

As the graphic above shows, more than £93bn was spent on nuclear weapons in the last year alone. Against the backdrop of increased overall military spending, this is all money which could have been spend on tackling the climate crisis, alleviating global poverty or improving access to healthcare around the world.

There are a number of ways you can join this campaign and take action on nuclear weapons spending. You can find ideas on the ICAN website.
